RE: Duggars and their 18 kids

carbon footprint? Are you serious?
Does that mean we should be like China and their policies? Do you really think it solves anything from a "enviromental" standpoint??
I personally think it is each family's choice.
I also think children ARE a blessing, and should be treated as such.
Yes, as a matter of fact I am VERY serious. Other than our ability to think and use tools, we are not much different than any other animal on this planet. When the population of a given spiecies get too large for it's food supply, it either dies off from starvation or is weakened to the point that stronger predators reduce the population. Humans have overcome most of that problem by mechanization and science. But the bottom line is we as a spiecies have lost sight of the basic principle of life (a given area can support just so many occupants).
The oil supply is finite, whether a myth or good science there's global warming, anti-social gangs even in rural areas, and just general crowding. The idea of adopting instead of birthing another baby is, in my opinion a sound, practical, and on the whole a much more humane start on slowing this growth explosion.
I believe that education is the best first step. Years ago seat belts and motorcycle helmets were not used. Now, although mostly by legislation, every state has seatbelt laws. Prior to that anyone with more than two brain cells firing saw the benefit of seat belts and wore them. Those that refused probably needed to be removed from the gene pool anyway but, someone thought it best to legislate personal decision for the general population's well being.

RE: Duggars and their 18 kids

I should have been more specific, SFPROP stated where I was going when I posted. I know people with 7 kids and they are all well behaved and a pleasure to be around. However, the impact on that many humans on the planet is irresponsible, period. I heard an interview where the oldest daughter said she wanted as many kids as her mother. Lack of debt and polite, well behaved kids are a good things, but it doesn't lessen their impact on the planet. Imagine the Duggar's carbon footprint. Soon to be ten times that of a childless couple. Regardless of the financial security of the family, they're still using a lot of resources most of the rest of us are trying very hard to conserve.
Think of what the condition of the world would be today if there were half as many people. Imagine driving through Phoenix, Los Angeles or San Francisco with half as many cars on the road.
I don't mean we should chastise them, but at the very least irresponsible reproduction like that should not be celebrated.

Anyone else out there think that doing a television show on these people is sending the wrong message in this age of overpopulation and such?

RE: Anyone have experience with being on probation?

Missed appointments can result in a warrant. Probation is a state agency and work basic state hours unless they're doing a sweep or some other enforcement detail. So weekdays between 8:30 and 4:30 is not unusual. As the Probation Department knows where he works, they or the local law enforcement agency can come into his work place, put on the bracelets and walk him out the front door any time of day. No consideration to your work load or schedule..

RE: Hou do you handle a road rage situation?

Your story sounds serious, but I can tell you a funny one that happened to me a few months back. I was on my way to work on the freeway and traffic was fairly heavy but still moving at 60 mph. I was in the center lane of the three lanes. A car pulled right up on my rear within inches from my bumper. I could see the guy in the car pounding on his steering wheel and mouthing words to me. So I slowed down a little to make sure I blocked him in behind me with a truck to my right side and a car on my left. Eventually he was able to get around the truck on the right and as he pulled up next me on the right he gave me the one finger salute and I smiled at him. That got him even more ticked off so he raced forward and swerved right in front of me cutting me off. Bad luck for him though since I'm a cop and I was in an unmarked police car. I turned on the emergency lights and even added the siren for effect and pulled him over. I approached the right side of his car and said, "I bet you had no idea what you were doing to a cop did you?" Strangely, he was nice and poolite, but I still called for a CHP unit to come by and had the guy cited for tailgating and unsafe lane change. I gave him a big break because his actions were actually reckless driving, but since his attitude improved he only got a $500 ticket instead of a $2500 misdemeanor ticket. I bet he's more careful in the future about who he does that too.
Funny how knuckleheads are. Very similar thing happened to me when I was in the Detective Bureau, only there were just the two of us on a two lane mountain road. He came up behind me and tailgated me AT THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT (violation #1), then passed over a solid double yellow line (#2), then slowed to 25 in a 55 (#3), then after several miles sped up to over 70 in the 55 (#4), then kept it at 50 when he entered the 35 MPH zone at the city limits #5). Only when he pulled into a gas station one of our marked units was parked in front of him so he kept his eyes on him. I walked up to his window and asked for his license and registration, he said as he turned toward me, "I don't have to show you...." About that time he saw the badge and .45 in the shoulder holster (left the jacket in the car). Real polite. I did cite him for every violation I saw.

My first choice would be the 1966 Austin Healey 3000 Mkll. Brittish racing green, wire wheels, glass pacs (after knocking off the mufflers and resonators on a dirt road).

RE: Use marker and put SS number on arm

Only problem with that order is the Social Security number is almost worthless for identifying a body by a local law enforcement agancy. You state drivers license or ID card number would be a better/faster method of notifying your next of kin. Feds won't give local LE any information related to SS numbers. Local can run drivers licenses and ID cards through NCIC.

RE: Bellingham, WA to San Diego in February.

I would find a campground in the Bakersfield to Frasier park area, then time LA for 10AM to 2PM, avoiding Monday and Friday. The easiest route is probably south 5 to the south 405 back onto the south 5.
The best way through LA is to avoid it by taking the 58 east out of Bakersfield, to the 395 south. Then the 15 south.
Instead of adding a day to the trip, stay on the I-5 to the 210 (just south of Valencia at the extreme end of the Los Angeles County area), then the 15 to San Diego. The Valencia RV park is at I-5 and 126 about 10 miles north of the 210 turn off. Never stayed there but it is a handy spot. Easy on/off the 5. Leave Valencia about 0900 and you should have no problems and little traffic (relatively speaking).
We took that route to San Diego two years ago and found it very easy and traffic on a Thursday was light that time of day.

RE: Would you want to be a teacher?!?!?

Can you say 'No Child Left Behind'. I taught from 1966 to 1972 when I went into another profession. Society has been dumbing down the educational system for the last 20 yrs and society always blames the teachers. Quite frankly I don't understand why anyone goes into the educational field today.
The parents have allowed the dumbing down to happen by not taking action against school administrators who dictate such policies. If the administrators don't have the guts to push the students those adminisstrators need to be forced out of their jobs.

RE: reporting call to FCC

I got one of those calls today. I have caller ID on my phone and all it showed for the caller's number was "Restricted". They block their number so you CAN'T report them. I have turned some in by name only, but you have to listen to their recording for a long time before they ID. I just hang up.
Frank
When I get one that's restricted I will answer the call and get the phone # to call them back as if I am interested.
It you don't know, it's also illegal for solicitors to have blocked caller IDs. I make sure they get reported even if I have to bait them.
It is also illegal to have a recorded message played. The rules state that a human must be on the phone when the callee answers.
Had a local property management company repeatedly call us from a "For Rent" sign we had in one of our houses. Called the woman then read and explained the apprporoiate section to her. Then followed up with a report to the Do Not Call List. Never heard from her again.
